Ready-made, made to order or custom?
Ready-made furniture suits a room where a standard size and finish work well. Confirm stock and delivery timing. Made-to-order furniture may offer a maker's established design with selected fabrics, finishes or dimensions. A custom piece starts with a more specific brief and usually needs a clear drawing and approval process.
Agree what the quote covers and who is responsible for final measurements. Keep the approved drawing or specification with the order. Ask which changes are possible once production begins and how they affect price and timing.
Measure the room and the route into it
Measure the space including skirting boards, heaters, windows and nearby doors. Mark the footprint with removable tape or paper. Check that people can move around it and that drawers, cupboards or reclining sections can open.
Record width, depth and height, not only the named size.
Measure door openings, hallways, stairs and tight turns.
Ask whether legs or sections can be removed for delivery.
Check lift dimensions and booking requirements.
Tell the supplier about access restrictions before accepting the quote.
A sofa that fits the room may still be difficult to move through the entrance. Packaged dimensions and the delivery method can differ from the furniture's final footprint.
Materials, construction and finish
Ask which materials are used in the frame, surface, upholstery and internal components. A timber name does not describe every part, and a fabric colour does not tell you its care requirements. For a table, consider daily use and cleaning; for seating, try the seat depth and back support if possible.
Request a sample where it will help. View it in the room's light beside existing surfaces. Ask how to maintain the finish and whether replacement covers, cushions or components can be ordered later. Keep the care instructions with the receipt.
Write a useful quote brief
Purpose: dining, work, lounging, storage or a specialised setting.
Space: room measurements and maximum furniture dimensions.
People: number of users and daily activity.
Appearance: preferred materials, colours and examples.
Timing: required arrival date and flexibility.
Delivery: address, access and installation needs.
Compare the same scope. Delivery, installation, upgrades and site work can change the total. Check the payment schedule, approval process and what happens if a measurement changes.
Confirm manufacture and aftercare
Search the maker in our licence-holder register, then ask where the exact piece's significant manufacturing happens. Keep the answer connected to the model or custom specification you order.
For a bedroom, our bed and mattress guide separates base, mattress and delivery questions. Each component needs a clear specification and care plan.
Your questions
What should I ask a custom furniture maker?
Provide dimensions, use, materials and delivery details. Ask what drawings, samples, approvals and installation are included.
Does a NZ furniture brand make every item here?
Check the particular piece. A business can offer products with different manufacturing origins.
Your next step
Turn your room measurements into a clear brief. Find a maker, check its licensed products and request a quote covering the full job.
