New Zealand made beds: a maker story
NZ Natural Bedding
Our November 2023 NZ Natural Bedding profile introduces locally made bedding and the work behind its products. Use the story as a starting point for questions about a particular mattress, base or bedding item.
Our NZ made products hub covers the wider home. For a bed, keep the manufacturing question specific: different components can use different materials and processes, even when they are sold together.
Compare the whole bed specification
Mattress: dimensions, construction, firmness options and care.
Base: compatibility, support requirements and assembly.
Frame: external footprint, headboard height and clearance.
Topper: purpose, thickness and effect on total bed height.
Accessories: what is included and what is optional.
A named bed size is a useful starting point, but confirm the actual dimensions with the maker. The frame can extend beyond the mattress, and a tall mattress or topper can change how the bed feels to get into. Check that the components are designed to work together.
Try comfort in the intended position
Where a showroom or sample is available, ask how to compare the options. Use the positions you normally rest in and allow enough time to assess the feel. If two people share the bed, both should take part in the choice.
Firmness descriptions differ between products. Ask what the maker means by its labels and how the materials and construction affect the options. A bed's origin does not establish a health benefit or guarantee comfort for every person. For a medical requirement, seek appropriate professional advice.
Measure the bedroom and delivery access
Record the available floor area, nearby doors and storage. Allow room for walking, opening drawers and changing bedding. Check the overall height where a window, shelf or sloping ceiling affects the space.
Measure door openings, stair turns and hallway widths.
Ask whether the base splits or the frame arrives disassembled.
Confirm packaged dimensions and the delivery method.
Tell the supplier about lifts, parking or access limits.
Agree who assembles the bed and removes packaging.
If replacing an old bed, arrange its removal separately unless the supplier explicitly includes that service. Ask whether the delivery team can remove or dismantle existing furniture.
Questions about materials and manufacture
Ask what is inside the mattress as well as what covers it. Request the composition of layers and covers, the place of significant manufacture and the instructions for the complete product. A description of one natural fibre does not explain every component.
Ask about rotating, turning, cleaning and ventilation according to the maker's instructions. Check which parts can be repaired or replaced and what any warranty covers. Keep those terms with your order rather than relying on a general headline claim.
Compare the full delivered cost
Request a quote that separates the mattress, base, frame, optional extras, delivery and assembly. Confirm production lead time and the payment schedule. Read any trial, return or exchange conditions carefully, including eligibility, timing and collection costs.
Look up the maker and product in our licence-holder register. For finishing the room, compare other furniture and measure a wool blanket against the actual bed dimensions.
Your questions
Should I check the mattress and base separately?
Yes. Confirm each component's origin, dimensions and compatibility, even when sold as a set.
Are bed-size names enough for ordering?
Confirm the actual dimensions, external frame footprint and delivery dimensions. Those details determine whether the bed fits the room and access route.
Your next step
Prepare your measurements and component list before requesting a quote. Find the maker, check the product details and compare a complete bed specification.
