Montreux Furniture
Our January 2024 Montreux Furniture profile includes outdoor furniture alongside its Christchurch furniture-making story. Ask about the particular outdoor range, materials, dimensions and care.Peter & Son
Our January 2024 Peter & Son story features handmade outdoor tables, chairs and benches, with custom work. It is a useful example of the questions a maker can help resolve when standard dimensions do not suit a space.
Use our NZ made products hub to explore other local purchases. For indoor pieces, our furniture guide covers room measurements, finishes and installation.
Plan the space around the furniture
Measure the area and sketch doors, steps, paths, planting and fixed features. Mark the proposed furniture footprint, then add the space needed to pull out chairs and walk past. A table that fits the deck can still make a doorway awkward to use.
Decide how many people need a place regularly and occasionally.
Check whether dining, lounging or flexible seating is the priority.
Allow doors and gates to open fully.
Keep access to the areas you need to maintain.
Measure the delivery route as well as the final location.
For an uneven surface, ask how the design should be positioned and whether adjustment is available. Tell the maker about a sloping area or installation requirement before the quote is finalised.
Describe the exposure
Tell the maker whether the site is covered or open and how it is exposed to rain, sun, wind or coastal conditions. Ask which products are intended for those conditions and what care they require. Outdoor use is not one uniform environment.
If the furniture will be moved or stored, consider its weight, shape and whether it stacks or disassembles. Ask how cushions should be handled between uses and what storage space they need. Confirm any cover recommendations for the specific product.
Compare materials and finishes
Timber: ask about species, finish and the recommended maintenance routine.
Metal: ask about coating, joints and care in your location.
Upholstery: check whether cushions are intended to remain outside and how to clean and dry them.
Mixed materials: ask how each component should be cared for.
Fasteners and fittings: check what can be replaced and how repairs are arranged.
A material name alone does not establish suitability for every outdoor setting. Ask about the complete construction and the maker's stated use. Request a finish sample where appearance matters, and understand how the surface is expected to change with use and exposure.
New Zealand made outdoor furniture: a quote checklist
Give the maker the intended use, dimensions, number of seats, site conditions and preferred materials. Include photographs or a sketch if they help explain the location. Ask whether the quote includes delivery, assembly and any installation work.
For custom work, agree the drawing, finish and approval process. Confirm production lead time and what changes are possible after approval. Compare the full delivered cost rather than a product price with different services attached.
Exact product or agreed custom specification.
Manufacturing location and significant processes.
Dimensions, seating capacity and weight where relevant.
Care instructions and replacement-part options.
Delivery access, timing and assembly responsibility.
Check before ordering
Look up the business in our licence-holder register and review the product details. Ask the maker to confirm the model or custom piece you intend to buy.
If the furniture is a present, involve the recipient in dimensions and maintenance choices. Our gift guide offers smaller alternatives where a surprise is more important than a custom specification.
Keep the order, approved drawing and care instructions together. Once the furniture arrives, check it against the agreed specification and raise any delivery or assembly question with the supplier promptly.
Your questions
What should I tell an outdoor furniture maker about my site?
Provide dimensions, access, intended use and exposure to weather. Those details help the maker discuss suitable products and care.
Does outdoor furniture need no maintenance?
Follow the care instructions for the product's materials and finish. Ask about cleaning, storage and any periodic maintenance before purchasing.
Your next step
Plan the space and the care routine before choosing the piece. Find a maker, check its products and request a specification suited to your outdoor setting.
