What the New Zealand Made logo tells buyers

The Kiwi trademark gives buyers a recognisable way to identify licensed products. It sits alongside your own brand and supports a clear origin claim. Our country of origin guide explains why manufacturing location, business ownership and design location are different facts.

The licence applies to the products or services on your approved list. If your business sells a mix of locally made and imported goods, place the mark so that shoppers can tell which products it covers. A logo in a shop window or on a website should not create an impression that every item qualifies.

Check eligibility before designing the label

For goods, the manufacturing that creates the product's essential characteristics must happen in New Zealand. The nature of the product matters: fabric cut and sewn here can become New Zealand-made clothing, while simply bottling a product whose essential character came from elsewhere is a different situation.

  • Identify each product or range you want to include.

  • Describe the materials, suppliers and manufacturing steps, including work done overseas.

  • Keep records that support your explanation of where the product is made.

  • Prepare your statement about meeting a UN Sustainable Development Goal.

Our product provenance worksheet helps organise those details. Service businesses should use our existing service trademark information for the rules that apply to them.

Apply, receive approval, then use the artwork

  • Complete the licence application with your business and product details.

  • Review the licence fees for your staff band and the registration fee.

  • Provide the required declaration and supporting information so your application can be assessed.

  • After approval, use the official logos and artwork area for the appropriate mark.

The published manufacturer, product or service licence starts at $299 plus GST annually for 0-5 staff, with a $95 plus GST one-off registration fee. Larger staff bands have different annual fees. Use the pricing page to check the band that applies to your whole organisation.

NZ Made stickers, packaging and online use

Plan the mark at the size it will actually appear. Keep its proportions intact, leave it legible against the background and use the authorised design. Check the production proof as well as the screen version: a small sticker, a fabric label and a web banner have different viewing conditions.

Placement

Check before release

Product sticker or packaging

The marked product is on your approved list and the origin claim is clear.

Product page

The logo sits with the qualifying item, including the correct variant.

Collection page

Locally made and imported items are clearly distinguished.

Printed marketing

The artwork remains legible and uses the required certification notation.

Include CertTM or Certification TM close to the mark as required by the rules. Colour can suit your design, but changing the shape or artwork needs written approval. Keep the printer's final proof with your artwork files.

Keep your product list and marketing aligned

Check your licence when you introduce a new product, change a manufacturer or alter a production process. Apply to add qualifying goods to the product list before using the mark on them. Give your designer, printer and reseller the same approved artwork and clear instructions about which products it belongs with.

A short internal checklist can prevent an old packaging file being reused for a changed product. Record the product name, artwork version, approval date and person responsible. The certification trademark explanation is useful when briefing a marketing team about the mark's role.

Your questions

Can I download the NZ Made logo and use it immediately?

Use of the Kiwi trademark requires a licence covering the qualifying goods or services. Apply first, then obtain the official artwork for your approved use.

Does a licence mean every product my business sells is NZ made?

The mark applies to the products or services on the approved list. Make that scope clear wherever the logo appears.

Can imported fabric be used in NZ-made clothing?

Yes, clothing cut and sewn in New Zealand from imported fabric can meet the essential-character test. Explain the actual manufacturing steps in your application.
