Made in New Zealand - What does it mean?

Made in New Zealand means a product is substantially transformed in New Zealand. This law applies to any business that says its products are New Zealand Made

What is substantial transformation?

For a substantial transformation to occur there must be a:

Fundamental change in that country in form, appearance or nature such that the goods existing after the change are new and different goods from those existing before the change.

Can any company use the New Zealand Made trade mark?

No. To use the New Zealand Made trade mark a company must ensure any products they are planning to label with the trade mark first comply with the country of origin guidelines in the Fair Trading Act. They must then apply for a licence through the Buy New Zealand Made Campaign.

Can I buy any of the stickers and swing tags with the Buy NZ Made logo if I do not hold a licence

No - only current Buy NZ Made licence holders can use the stickers and swing tags

How is the Campaign Funded?

The Campaign is run by business for business. The majority of funds raised from licence holders are used to market the trade mark. We receive no Government funding.

Who certifies that my products are New Zealand Made?

Responsibility for a correct claim lies with the manufacturer. The manufacturer must certify that the products comply with the Fair Trading Act - Country of Origin.

Members of Buy NZ Made have exclusive access to the iconic and incredibly well recognised "Kiwi in the triangle" logo, to help sell products or promote NZ made goods in retail space.

Over 95% of consumers recognise the iconic logo which has been around for over 20 years, promoting support of New Zealand manufactured goods and services.

The Buy NZ Made organisation is managed by a switched-on, friendly and helpful team who are focused on ensuring members get the most out of their membership. Membership FAQ

What do the different membership categories mean?

Buy NZ made has three different top level membership category's for business, these are:-

  • Manufacturer
  • Retailer
  • Cottage

An explanation of the membership categories:-

Manufacturer:

This is our full membership category. Members in this category:

  • Receive a licence to use the logo in all marketing material providing it meets the requirements of the Fair Trading Acts Country of Origin clause
  • Are able to label products with the logo that meet the requirements of the Fair Trading Acts Country of Origin clause.
  • Can purchase swing tags and stickers
  • Can purchase all point of sale material
  • Have a free profile and product listing in our Business Directory
  • Can create a retail profile for an additional $50.00 + GST per year in our "Shoppers" Directory
  • Fees are based on staff numbers.
  • Membership is automatically renewed each year unless Buy NZ made is otherwise advised in writing.

Retailer:

Our retailer membership is set up as a support for manufacturers. Members in this category:-

  • Receive a licence to use the logo in all marketing material providing it meets the requirements of the Fair Trading Acts Country of Origin clause
  • Are NOT able to label products as retailers cannot guarantee that any products sold meet the requirements of the Fair Trading Acts Country of Origin clause
  • Can purchase point of sale material
  • Have a free profile in our Shoppers directory that can link to their website and face book pages.
  • Can list products they sell from our manufacturing members on their "Shoppers" profile
  • Can link a product on their shoppers profile to the product page on their e-commerce site
  • Fees are based on number of stores.

Cottage:

This is the same as our full membership category but applies to small business or any business that turns over less than $200,000 per annum.

Members in this category have the same privileges as a full manufacturer member but their memberships are NOT automatically renewed each year

What membership category do I fit into?

Manufacturer with retail store

f you are a manufacturer with a retail store, and you want to label your products, you should join as a manufacturer.

Manufacturer with turnover less than $200,000 P/A

if you are a manufacturer whose turnover is under $200,000 PA you can opt to join either our full manufacturing membership or as a cottage industry member.

Retail Store

If you have a retail store or a chain of stores you can join as a retail member.

Online Store

If you have an online store, and do not manufacturer products you should join as a retailer. If you are a manufacturer with an online store you should join one of our manufacturing categories.

Wholesaler/Distributor

If you are a wholesaler or Distributor who uses a contract manufacturer to produce custom products for you, you can join the campaign under either of our manufacturing categories.

If you do not have any custom made goods, you can join as a retailer.

What does it cost to Join the Buy NZ Made Campaign.

The cost of joining the campaign is dependent on the following:-

The licence category

  • Your staff number or
  • How many stores you own or
  • Your annual turnover.
